Dear Ross,
I will soon be sending you a package of Dufay material. There will
be small sheets which include the complete set of pieces with a small amount
of editing. Mostly what I have done is to put the numbers on the titles and
reduce the amount of space between the verses of the texts. To my eye this
makes the layout appear a little less crowded. Also I have reduced the size
the ficta accidentals to 75% of what they formerly were. (They could be made
yet still smaller if desired.)
In the course of doing all this I noticed that the material saved on
tape does not seem to have all the latest corrections. Assuming that the copies
you sent me were definitive I changed my sources to agree. However I have not
done any real proof reading. I would strongly suggest that you go over these new
copies VERY slowly, item by item, and mark all corrections in colored pencil and
then send them back to me. Also I was not always sure about what constituted a
separate word in the texts. Perhaps in any crowded places you could mark the
word divisions with a different colored pencil. I have enclosed a marked copy
of number 37 along with a slightly respaced version. In this copy I have also
added a couple of leading dashes (line 2 and line 8) to show continuing words.
This is the usual way of doing things in modern editions. If you would like
these changes in all the pieces I may have time to do it. All the corrections,
etc., should get back to me as soon as possible. In August I will be going to
Paris for 4 months so I would like to leave here with all projects finished if
at all possible. I have so many things going on that I predict I will have very
little free time after May. The final printing of sheets could probably be done by
Lynn Toribara, but it would be nice if it all could be done by August.
In the package I'm sending you will find several copies of one page. They
are labeled A, B, C, D, and E. "A" is the basic size that comes out of the machine.
The others are blown up by factors of: B=1.36, C=1.5, D=2, E=2.6. The best copy
would probably come from reducing "E" to 38% of the given size. This would give
a final size approximately the same as "A". I can make larger sizes than "E" but
then they would have to be on 2 sheets of paper that would have to be taped together
before being photographed. If you find the right printer, the "D" size (X2) can be
be reduced to 50% without making an intermediate photo negative. This is probably the
cheapest way to get good final copy. Size "B" can be reduced to 64% by the newer
KODAK copy machines. Locally this costs .20 for the first copy, and then .035/copy
thereafter. I included a copy of this work. I have sent 2 copies of all the sizes
so you can send a complete set to your publisher and keep one too.
Very sincerely,
